About Us

Message from the Principal

Be resilient.
Be compassionate.

For 90 years, Ohyu Gakuen has empowered girls to become brave, confident, and curious women.

Beyond our strong academic foundation, we offer an education that prepares young women to thrive in a rapidly changing world—equipping them to serve their communities with humility and courage.

The school offers a wide range of curricular and extracurricular programs. One of our oldest traditions is our farming curriculum. Through sowing seeds, watering plants, and pulling weeds, students cultivate patience, teamwork, and a deeper appreciation for the cycles of life.

Singing is also a cherished tradition at our school. Frequent opportunities to sing together not only boost students’ confidence but also strengthen the bonds of unity between the students of today and the past.

We take pride in being a girls’ school that provides an environment where young women of the future can learn, grow, and challenge themselves. Recognizing that girls and boys have distinct attributes and dispositions during childhood and adolescence, we tailor our approach to meet these unique needs. By doing so, we empower girls to succeed and make a meaningful impact on society.

School Motto

Since its foundation, Ohyu Gakuen has instilled three core values in our students: Love, Sincerity, and Creativity. These values are deeply rooted in our Christian foundation and reflect the principles of “Empowerment of Women” established by our founder, Genzo Ichikawa.

With the love bestowed by God, we encourage our girls to become compassionate and confident women. Sincerity helps them discover their potential, strengths, and passions. Creativity enables them to develop innovative ideas and connect with people who hold different values.

History

Founded in 1935, Ohyu Gakuen Girls’ Junior and Senior High School has been empowering young women and providing a well-rounded education for 90 years.

Two educators laid the foundation of Ohyu Gakuen. The first was Mr. Genzo Ichikawa, who served for many years as the Principal of Tokyo Furitsu Dai-ichi High School for Girls, the first public senior high school for girls in Tokyo. He is widely regarded as one of the pioneers of formal education for women. The second was Ms. Shizu Ishikawa, who was mentored by the renowned Christian philosopher Mr. Kanzo Uchimura and Umeko Tsuda, a prominent feminist and advocate for women’s education in Japan.

In the 1930s, the prevailing ideal for womanhood was to “be a good wife and a wise mother.” Mr. Ichikawa, however, championed a different perspective. He taught his students to “first be a person, and only then a woman, flourishing by fully realizing your potential to contribute to society as a valuable member.” His former students, who embraced his teachings, came together to raise funds for the establishment of a new school and invited Ichikawa to serve as its principal. Since then, we have remained committed to the core principles of his teachings, guiding students to discover their unique talents and develop their abilities.
